- All rising sixth grade students [current 5th graders] are invited to join our band.
- Sixth grade is the ONLY time that students are allowed to start their band studies.
- No prior music experience is necessary.

- At Registration: Select Band as one of your top three elective choices.
- What if I change my mind over the Summer? If you forgot to list band as one of your top elective choices, be sure to have your parents reach out to the counselors or contact me as soon as possible. Typically, schedule changes can be made through the first week of school.
Which instruments can I play in Band?
We start with four instruments in 6th grade: flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone. Use the instrument matching tool below to determine which instrument might be right for you!
*Our band also includes saxophone, percussion [drums and mallets] oboe, bassoon, horn, euphonium and tuba. Auditions for these auxiliary instruments are typically held in the Spring. Only a limited number of students will be chosen to play these instruments to maintain a balanced instrumentation. Students interested in these instruments should plan on playing flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone first.

Mission Statement
The purpose of the Phillips Band Program is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their musical skills through playing a variety of music on an instrument of their choice. Emphasis is given to providing a strong fundamental approach to instrumental performance in large ensembles, chamber groups and solo. In addition to performance, students will also learn skills in music theory, ear training, improvisation and composition. Through the study of instrumental music we hope to instill a lifelong love of music.

AnnouncementsOur 8th grade band attended the NCCDBA Music Performance Adjudication Festival on March 16th. Our band represented our school well both on stage and off. They looked good, their behavior was awesome and they played great. I am proud of them and I hope you are too.
For a number of reasons, I made the decision to perform for the judge's comments only this year. In other words, we weren't given a rating. Ratings are always nice, but arriving at the culmination of the performance cycle, the professional quality critique and the post-performance reflection are the real value in Music Performance Adjudication [MPA]. We'll take our data and build from there! We've got lots of events ahead of us yet and I can't wait to see how far we can go. We had three students from Phillips audition for the NC Bandmasters All-State Honors Band this year. All three candidates represented our school and band well. However, Phillips is proud to have the 5th chair flute player in the state and also the 1st alternate flute player. Way to Go Falcons!
Congratulations to the 9 students from Phillips that took the brave step to audition for the NCCDBA All-District Honors band this January. Each student was required to submit a video of themselves performing a battery of scales and a video of them performing a prepared solo. Preparing for the audition takes months, dedication and lots of hard work. Each audition is adjudicated by a panel of band directors from across the district.
Seven of Phillips students were selected. Two students are first alternates which puts them in position to participate if another student is unable to attend the clinic [in a regular year]. Also of note, FOUR of these students are eligible to audition for the All-State Honors Band this March. Way to go Falcons!
